Characterization of the built heritage of the Historic Centre of Cuenca-Ecuador
Abstract
INTRODUCTION. Large-scale seismic vulnerability studies, which yield more accurate results, require more input data characterising the buildings in the study area. Therefore, the present work deals with the geometric characterisation of the traditional built heritage of the Historic Centre of Cuenca (CHC)-Ecuador, made up of adobe and brick buildings. OBJECTIVE. To establish ranges of variation for dimensional geometric parameters and a catalogue of typical adobe and brick buildings, with a view to their numerical modelling. METHOD. The variability of the geometric parameters considered was explored by means of three strategies: 1) consultation of the city's Cadastral Database, 2) review of architectural theses and 3) review of CHC building intervention files. RESULTS. 1) Table of variability ranges of the geometrical parameters of adobe and brick buildings, 2) Catalogue of six typical traditional buildings: three brick buildings and three adobe buildings. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS. Due to the assumed discards, the typicity captured in the catalogue of buildings has a bias towards non-intervened typologies and regular floor plans; which, although challenging, can be numerically modelled in current seismic analysis software for masonry buildings.
